Pamunkey River Atlantic Sturgeon
Chesapeake Scientific has published two papers in the Transactions of the American Fisheries Society on Pamunkey River sturgeon in the Fall of 2014. We've put acoustic tags in over fifty York River sturgeon and we are actively collaborating with the Navy delineating critical habitats for numerous protected species. Check out these and other publications. |
Tracking and Identification of Atlantic Sturgeon
Chesapeake Scientific tracks and identifies Atlantic sturgeon habitats in the James River of Virginia for the Protected Resources Branch of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), in cooperation with the James River Association, Army Corps of Engineers, the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) and US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).

Protected Resources Tracking in Lower Chesapeake Bay
Chesapeake Scientific tracks protected resources in the lower Chesapeake Bay and provides data analysis that identifies and delineates preferred habitat through a sonic tracking array for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) and other Navy entities in collaboration with HDR, Inc. Investigations include tagging efforts which have identified previously unknown distinct populations of Atlantic Sturgeon.

Sturgeon Bycatch Reduction Through Anchored Gill Net Alterations
Chesapeake Scientific designs and tests solutions to reduce sturgeon bycatch in anchored gill nets for the Virginia striped bass fishery and the North Carolina inshore flounder fishery for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in collaboration with Cardno ENTRIX.

U.S. Navy Pile Driving Research
Chesapeake Scientific tags and tracks Atlantic herring in and around naval facilities and through zones of naval interest in order to identify potential ecosystem impacts due to pile driving activities on behalf of the US Navy in collaboration with HDR, Inc, NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and USFWS (United States Fish and Wildlife Service).
